Ode to Blue Dream – A Cannasseur’s appreciation of the Incredible Blue Dream Weed Strain

An Emerald Triangle cannasseur favorite – the Blue Dream weed strain

Girl Scout Cookies, OG Kush, Gorilla Glue, White Widow, Pineapple Express, Grandaddy Purple, Purple Urkle, Purple Haze, Sour Diesel, Northern Lights, Chemdawg, Skywalker OG, Green Crack, Strawberry Cough, Cherry pie, Harlequin, KGB, Trainwreck. . .

In my 53 years, I’ve smoked a lot of weed – from seedy brown Mex back in the day to the finest, stickiest, most potent Mendo buds grown by the best weed farmers in the pot farms of California’s Emerald Triangle on our weed tours.

As a tour guide in the weed tourism industry, bringing travelers to Mendocino farms, and as a cannabis lover and cannasseur I have definitely enjoyed my share of weed over the years – Indicas, sativas, hybrids, sungrown, indoor grown, hydroponic, aeroponic, soil grown – you name it – I’m imbibing it.

Every time I take out a new weed tour group to The Emerald Triangle, I see new strains that I hadn’t heard of before, and I’m as well informed as anyone who works in the cannabis space.

It seems in the competitive world of California cannabis that it’s all about the newest, latest strain.  What’s new this week?  What has the highest THC?

But there are some legendary strains that should never go out of fashion.

For me there’s one strain that stands head and shoulders above the rest.  No other marijuana strain has even come close, in my estimation.  That strain is Blue Dream.

When I smoke Blue Dream it makes me more creative, more philosophical, pragmatic, calm, and euphoric.  I become the Buddha on Blue Dream.  I’ve come up with some of my best ideas, and had some of my most enlightening conversations under the influence of this fragrant flower.

The Perfect balance of Indica and Sativa – of energizing and relaxing  – of THC and CBD – It has such a lovely floral bouquet. It grows big, beautiful, bounteous and plentiful.  It’s the weed that loves you back.

Look at that huge leaf on that Blue Dream weed plant!

Imagine my distress when I couldn’t find Blue Dream anywhere!

The budtenders would make other recommendations, “Try Super Silver Haze.”, “Try Jack Herer.  It has similar qualities”.  And even though those are both excellent strains, they just don’t come close.

One year I couldn’t even find Blue Dream clones to plant in my garden.  I had to settle for Blue Dream Kush – a hybrid of Blue Dream and OG Kush.  It had the familiar terpenes, and even a similar euphoria, but it just didn’t give me the same things I’d come to love about the high from imbibing Blue Dream.

The Blue Dream strain is a cannasseur’s delight

Don’t mess with perfection.

Don’t get me wrong.  I’m all for creating new strains, and for biodiversity in general.  Create, explore, but don’t throw out phenomenal bud just because it’s not the newest thing.  To paraphrase the song, make new strains, but keep the old, one is silver, and the other’s gold!

This year I put out the word that I was looking for Blue Dream seeds, and next thing I knew, someone was handing me a baggie.  A friend of mine planted them in his garden for me.  The pics in this blog are of those lovely ladies, just beginning to flower as I post.

He called me up, “Where did you get those seeds?!?  The plants are enormous, with dinner plate sized leaves, and they smell amazing!”  My friend has been a professional medical pot grower for years, and he could see that these plants were something special.  I later found out that they came from the genius who originated the strain, hybridizing Blueberry with Haze, creating the magic alchemy that all marijuanna growers hope to achieve.

So please, growers, keep trying to achieve that alchemy.  Keep developing new strains like Stardawg, MAC, Sundae Driver, Bruce Banner, Mendo Breath, and Cuties, (That last strain, I was given the honor of naming by its creators – Emerald City Genetics).  Dispensaries, keep offering the latest and the greatest, but don’t stop carrying one of the all time best marijuana strains just because it’s not a new name.

I will always try out the new strains, but I eagerly await the fall harvest to get reacquainted with an old friend.
