What is The Emerald Triangle?

Visiting the pot farms in California’s Emerald Triangle on a weed tour is easy! It’s just a short drive north of San Francisco

If you’ve been following our blog, our Facebook page, our Twitter, or our Instagram you’ve probably heard us talk about our cannasseur weed tours to pot farms in California’s Emerald Triangle, but what is The Emerald Triangle exactly?

As guests learn on our 420 tours, The Emerald Triangle is made up of 3 Northern California counties:  Mendocino County, Humboldt County, and Trinity County.  These three Northern California counties have the ideal terroir – that combination of soil and climate – for growing the best weed on the planet.  These three counties make up the largest cannabis growing region in the United States.  There are more weed farmers growing more weed here than any place else in the country, and they’ve been growing here for generations.

It all began when President Richard Nixon’s DEA was looking to destroy the anti war movement by going after hippies in The Haight Ashbury for imbibing.

According to Nixon’s Council and Assistant for Domestic Affairs, John Ehrlichman, “We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin. And then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities.  We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”

Hippies escaping the DEA started the back to the land movement, and became weed farmers in The Emerald Triangle

The effect was to drive the hippies out of the Haight, and out of the cities into rural America.  They called it the back to the land movement.  Hippies started farms and agricultural communes from the Canadian border to the deep south, but the majority went north into what we now call The Emerald Triangle.  There they grew their own fruits, vegetables, and, of course, weed.  Pot farming in California went through the roof as the hippies from the Haight became weed farmers in The Emerald Triangle.  The volcanic soil and Mediterranean climate are ideal for growing phenomenal bud, and generations of botanical knowledge passed down from generation to generation has created a deep brain trust in this region.  Everyone from beginning growers to professional weed farmers seek out the tours SF offers up into The Emerald Triangle to learn from the best pot growers in the world.

The guests we take to the Mendocino farms we visit on our weed tour all come away with a much deeper knowledge of cannabis cultivation and what pot plants need from planting, through harvest and curing.
